a few quick facts about me:
fact #1: i have recently come to the conclusion that i am a very sentimental and nostalgic person.
fact #2: i loved high school. particularly my senior year.
fact #3: i love college...a lot more than high school.
now that we have the basic facts out of the way, i can write the rest of this post and you will understand where i am coming from.
this week as i was coming home from hebgen, i had the craziest reminiscing moment. i remember the exact same evening last year, driving home from the cabin. sara ference had come up with me and she, my mom and i were discussing whether i should get my "rebellious" streak going and continue the tradition of sleeping over in the olympus high football stadium. i told myself that was something i had to do before i graduated, and time was running out. sara and i analyzed and overanalyzed whether we should do it...and my mom was surprisingly encouraging.
and so we did.
memorial day monday night and june 1st morning at the olympus high football stadium. (now it's not such a big deal, but at the time that was probably the wildest thing i'd ever done). i'd say this story is definitely deserving of it's own post.
that same night exactly one year later i sat in my den with 2 out of the 3 girls who were a part of that little adventure and talked about life. we've all changed a lot since that night, (hopefully we are a little more rebellious...) but they are still some of my best friends.
and those weird reminiscing moments kept happening, and more vivid memories kept coming.
tuesday i got a sneak peek at the 2011 yearbook and talked with another friend and fellow editor-in-chief bryson. i remembered feeling the exact same way as him about the book and finishing senior year. i drove by the high school last night and saw everyone signing yearbooks. i remember being so stressed out about distributing all of those books a year ago. worrying if the students were going to like it, making sure everyone signed a page. i remember shedding a few tears leaving the yearbook room that wednesday night. (see here and here for more details)
and then today i remembered graduating one year ago. being soooo nervous to sing my solo, and sitting next to aubrie. i remembered staying up late (or early) and a memorable girls sleepover. i remembered feeling so excited and nervous about what the coming year would bring. i was branching out and doing something i'd never done before--without my friends.
this week's reflections have really not been a sad thing or a "i wish i could do it again" (please no), but a very happy remembrance. reminiscing on those times has been a very good thing, and maybe that's just because i am a nostalgic and sentimental person. but, i believe it's because it has given me the chance to realize that i have progressed.
that's right. i've changed, and i've noticed.
i moved to cedar city and met these people:
and they taught me a lot and helped me get through the hard times and enjoy the good times. they inspire me, and they have helped me progress in the past year.
i loved learning and new classes, breaking out of my comfort zone. i went to dubai and met more inspiring people and heard a lot of motivational ideas.
so, as my sentimental self looks back at the past year, i believe that i can honestly say:
look how far you've come, and look how much further you can and will go!
be bold.
